Lost in Rhodes

Man is it hot!  Greece is beautiful and hot.

Today we are wandering around old town Rhodes trying to sort out some trip details and just survive the heat!  It was still 32 degrees celsius last night at 11pm. I think the high today was supposed to be 40 with humidity.
Old Town Rhodes - stole this pic from the internetz!
Greece reminds me a lot of Mexico - a mix of old and new, constant construction, loads of chaos and heat.  It's charming and loud and the cicadas have yet to shut up.  Everything seems to shut down completely in the afternoon for a siesta and then it opens back up until late at night.  With the heat it just makes sense!

The beach where we are staying is very pebbly so we haven't spent as much time there as we have at the pool.  Hopefully this weekend we will be able to get to some sandy beaches on the other side of the island.   We have been warned though that there is no breeze on that side of the island and that we should expect crazy heat.

This morning we took the bus in to Rhodes Town - a way cheaper alternative to the pricey taxis (hello 13 euros for an 8km ride!).  We have been walking around the harbor and the old town and have decided to try and avoid a little bit of the afternoon heat with a gin and tonic and some quality internet time at Mango Bar in the old town.  Man times have changed since I traveled last!  Now it's a pain in the ass to find an internet cafe - but you can get free wifi wherever you want.  Of course I left my laptop in England... Oh well - they are kind enough to let us use it for free as long as we are drinking.  That doesn't seem too hard!

The family we are staying with continues to feed us amazing food.  We've had feta cooked on the grill and these amazing feta and zucchini fritters.  We've ordered a fresh octopus for Monday before we go - so it should be interesting!  It seems like people come back year after year to stay with them.  There are a billion resorts along the coast here and I'm interested to see if that is true for the entire island or just the north end.  I forgot how challenging it was to be in a country where you can't read the language .  Can't wait to try and drive here!  Should make for some crazy times.

Alright, there's another gin and tonic with my name on it and plenty more photos to be taken on this lovely day.  Since I'm not really keen on paying $20 to rent a laptop for the day, I think my next update will have to wait until I get back to England.  Everything seems cheap over here until you realize you are paying for it in Euros!

Until next time,
Rachel x
